New KNEC 2023+ Grading Scheme (Default):
- 1 Compulsory Subject: Mathematics (Alt A).
- 1 Best Core Language: The higher grade between English, Kiswahili, or Kenyan Sign Language.
- 5 Best Remaining Subjects: Ranked purely by highest points achieved across any other sciences, humanities, technical, business, or second language.

- What is the new KNEC 2023+ KCSE grading system?
- Under the reformed grading system introduced by the Ministry of Education and KNEC, the KCSE Mean Grade is computed from only 2 compulsory subjects: 1) Mathematics; 2) The best-performed language (English, Kiswahili, or Kenyan Sign Language); plus the candidate's 5 best scores from any of the remaining subjects. This allows high-performing technical, business, science, or humanities subjects to count directly towards the mean grade.
- How many subjects do KCSE candidates sit for?
- Candidates are mandated by KNEC to register for a minimum of 7 subjects and a maximum of 9 subjects. Regardless of whether you sit for 7, 8, or 9 subjects, your official KCSE Mean Grade is computed from your best 7 subjects according to KNEC rules.
- What is the difference between Mean Grade and Aggregate Points?
- Aggregate Points is the sum of points across your best 7 subjects (maximum 84 points, where A=12, A-=11, down to E=1). Mean Points is the aggregate divided by 7 (maximum 12.00). Your Mean Grade is the official letter grade corresponding to your mean points.
- What grade do I need for University and TVET placement in Kenya?
- A mean grade of C+ (plus) qualifies for direct degree placement at Kenyan public and private universities under KUCCPS government sponsorship. Grades C and C- qualify for Diploma programmes at National Polytechnics and TVETs. Grades D+ and D qualify for Certificate courses, while D- and E qualify for Artisan skill training.
