How this tool works
Gross pay is the sum of basic salary, housing allowance and other taxable allowances. From that, NSSF, SHIF and the housing levy are deducted, along with any allowable pension contribution, to arrive at taxable pay.
PAYE is calculated on taxable pay using the graduated bands below, then reduced by the monthly personal relief of Ksh 2,400. Net pay is gross pay less PAYE, NSSF, SHIF, the housing levy, your pension contribution and any other deductions you entered.
- NSSF: 6% of pensionable pay, capped at Ksh 72,000 per month.
- SHIF: 2.75% of gross pay, minimum Ksh 300.
- Housing levy: 1.5% of gross pay.
- Pension relief is limited to Ksh 30,000 per month for tax purposes.
Assumptions: a resident employee paid monthly, no insurance or mortgage relief, no non-cash benefits, and no employer-specific arrangements.
Frequently asked questions
- Is this an official government calculator?
- No. ToolKit KE is independent and not affiliated with KRA, NSSF, SHA/SHIF or any government agency. The figures here are estimates based on published rates.
- Which deductions are applied before PAYE?
- NSSF, SHIF, the housing levy and allowable pension contributions are subtracted from gross pay to get taxable pay. PAYE is then calculated on that amount and reduced by the monthly personal relief.
- Why does my payslip differ from this estimate?
- Employers may apply insurance relief, mortgage interest relief, non-cash benefits, SACCO deductions, salary advances or a different pension arrangement. Those are not modelled here.
- Do you store the salary figures I enter?
- No. The calculation runs in your browser and nothing is sent to us or saved on our servers.
